Inspiration for this artwork is called Le Sommeil or (‘Sleep’). It was created in 1937 by Salvador Dali. This artwork is considered surrealism because of the morphing of object into unusual shapes and dimensions and the dream like idea. Dali describes his painting as: “The act of sleeping was a monster sustained on the crutches of reality”, which is exactly what this artwork is trying to show. Dali uses a combination of techniques to give this painting more meaning and depth. He uses contrasting colours of both warm (browns and oranges) and cool colours (blues) to contrast between the different subjects and make the face appear to advance in space.
